CLIMBING ARBORIST
Apprenticeship Training Program

INDUSTRY TRAINING AUTHORITY (ITA) AUTHORIZED PROGRAM (Level 2) —

Train for a career as a Certified Climbing Arborist. Climbing Arborists care and maintain trees and other woody shrubs, which require pruning and removing trees at heights. Climbing Arborists usually work in urban settings year-round, in varying weather conditions. Climbing Arborists must learn safe climbing techniques and learn how to prevent unnecessary damage to the tree.

The 8-week Climbing Arborist program focuses on climbing safety and the technical skills used while working in trees, and is distinct from ITA's Arborist Technician or Field Arborist training.

This program includes both classroom and hands-on training, and meets all applicable regulations and standards.

FORMAT & LOCATION:

  • TIME: 8 week, full-time program (240 hours; Mon-Fri)
  • COURSE DATES: TBA
  • LOCATION: Mission, BC (classroom: 32281-32215 Lougheed Highway) and
    Stave Falls Dam Outdoor Training Site (practical) see map
  • COURSE COSTS:
    • Tuition: $2100 (GST exempt)
    • Manuals: $120 + $6 GST = $126.00
    • Total: $2226
    • Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), Climbing Gear, and Hand Tools:
      Students are responsible for obtaining their own personal protection equipment, climbing gear and hand tools. EITI has worked with WesSpur Tree Equipment to create gear kits specifically designed for the Climbing Arborist.

The Climbing Arborist program includes Arboriculture and Safe Tree climbing practices. With a focus on practical, hands-on skills, combined with real-world career-specific classroom training, this program is highly focused on achieving career competencies within a short 8-week timeframe.

PRE-REQUISITES

Course Pre-Requisites

  • Arborist Technician – Certificate of Qualification
  • Ability to obtain driver’s license
  • Ability to obtain Level One First Aid
  • Physical strength and mobility to perform all aspects of the job


CERTIFICATION

Students must successfully complete the program with an academic grade of 70% or higher to receive a certificate of program completion.

Note that to obtain Certification as a Climbing Arborist, the Apprentice must successfully complete the Climbing Arborist Standardized Practical Assessment, which may only be taken after successful completion of this Apprenticeship Training Program, the ITA written exam, and 1,800 workplace hours.


CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Upon completion of this program, students will have a demonstrated capability and aptitude to perform essential aspects of the job, thereby increasing eligibility for employment. Please note, however, that this program does not provide employment placement.


TAX CREDITS

The B.C. provincial training tax credits provide refundable income tax credits for employers and employees who are engaged in apprenticeship programs administered through the Industry Training Authority (ITA). BC Training Tax Credits.


STUDENT HOUSING

Optional student housing, at preferred status room rates, is available at the Best Western Plus at 32281-32215 Lougheed Highway in Mission, BC. The complex includes Rockwell's restaurant, providing an extensive menu daily from 11:00am to 11:00pm.
